From Al Roy:
If you find yourself in Ohio in the spring or fall and are looking for some hard fighting fish,
check out Conneaut Creek for the steelhead run.
We fished with Kurt Bitikofer of Captain Kurt Charters for two days of fine fishing. The water was a bit high and slightly off color, but the steelhead didn’t seem to mind. Kurt had made arrangements to fish on private land, which allowed us to avoid the crowds. All in our group caught several over the two-day period. Kurt said the run hadn’t peaked yet.
The rig was an orange egg imitation with White Death (streamer) as a dropper, these were fished under a strike indicator. Most fish took the streamer either dead drifted or retrieved by jerky strips. The steelhead are beginning their spawning run and are not actively feeding but will attack minnows that will try to eat their eggs.
As is usually the case, the rookie caught the best fish.
Note: Redhorse suckers were also on their spawning run and hit our flies as well.
