FFI Morehead City Trip

Date

Nov 08 - 10 2024

Time

All Day

Cape Fear Flyfishers participated in the event last year. We expect FFI will do the event again this year. Dates TBD.

However, the club may go up on its own.

Here are comments from Jim White:

I plan to take my ocean boat (19.5 McKee Craft Center console) up there for several days.  It would be good if we could go during the week to avoid the weekend- crowds at the ramps.  Guides are expensive, and it’s not hard to figure out what to do.  Boat owners with trailers would be well served to consider trailering their boats up there so several club members can fish with them.   Boats in the 19–25-foot range will be ideal.  Smaller boats will work if the wind is down.

But I have never been up there when the wind was calm and nice; It’s November.  Only once have we turned around and gone home when we got to the Inlet and saw the condition of the ocean.  8wts can work but I use 9- and 10wt outfits.  Daylight savings time will be over so it will be getting dark early, and I bet the navigation gets dicey in the dark.  So, we start early and get home early.

A batch of hotels and motels have boat trailer parking (but take your gear inside every night!). This is the World’s Epicenter for fly fishing for false albacore.  Several acres of busting fish will get your heart pumping.  The world could come to an end, and you wouldn’t notice or care.  You can catch a batch or miss a batch.  But fishing the jump is always exciting.

The more boats we get up there the more folks from the club can go fishing.
