- Go at the right season – usually May-July
- Go early and stay late. Early morning and late day are usually best (dawn & dusk)
- Fish when the tide is turning – bait can be disoriented
- Fish near structure, drop-offs, streams
- Don’t underline – go heavier if you can. Go up from 6- & 7-wts. to 8- or 9-wt. Like 9-wt. best. depth-charge line is excellent. Use floating line for night fishing
- Fly selection is very important. Need only a few styles. Have these few in several lengths, colors, and weights: Good colors are black, white in various combinations, chartreuse, dull (olive), and silver.
- Clouser – size 4 – likes chartreuse
- Clouser – size 6 – olive/brown
- Deceiver- size 2 and 2/0- blue/white
- Gurglers
- Crab pattern
- Skinny baitfish such as Cowen’s Anchovie
- Vary your retrieve
- Practice casting with a big fly
- Use 9- & 10-wt. rods
- Go to a longer rod, switch rods are good
- Use a stripping basket
- Keep lines clean, clean every day, and straighten line before each trip
