Cape Fear Flyfishers Meeting Minutes—August 15, 2018

Good weather allowed for a productive casting clinic. After a rocky start getting the audio visual equipment to work we called the meeting to order and introduced our newest member, Dave Dewees, who is moving to the area from South Jersey with over 25 years of fly fishing experience. Welcome to CFF Dave! Guests in attendance included Ken Smith who is an avid fly fisherman with over 40 years experience from New England. John Sanders and Kevin Murga also attended as returning guests. In all, 20 members and guests attended the August meeting. Membership is now at 83.

The fly drawing was won by Scott Frederick.

Treasurer Scott Ewing reported that we have $4,952.

President Ed Smith mentioned the Board of Directors (well, at least the four that were able to attend) met just before our club monthly meeting to get a start on 2019 planning. Topics discussed included prospective officers, budget, educational efforts, speakers and topics for 2019 meetings and potential local activities and trips. More details will be shared with the Club members once we can solicit input from those officers who were unable to participate in the “Mini Board Meeting”.

Ed announced that Dan Smith, Director of Education, and his wife Maureen will be moving to the Seattle area soon. As a result, he will be resigning his position with the Club effective with the September 19 meeting. We’re sure going to miss Dan’s knowledge, commitment to fly fishing and friendship. If anyone has a particular passion about leading our educational efforts next year, please let Ed know.

RECENT EVENTS

The July smallmouth trip for eight club members had to be postponed due to heavy rains in the Galax, VA region of the New River. Calendar conflicts forced us into two groups of four – rescheduled for August 16-20 and August 26-30. Note, post meeting…the “B Team” of Bill Buchsbaum, the Rev, Dennis Hill and Forest Duncan had a good time during the first trip, but had it shortened a day due to rain. Numbers weren’t high, but good size fish and fun were had by all. We’ll see how the “A Team” of Paul Askew, Ed Smith, Ray Hitney and the Rev (again) does next week.

UPCOMING EVENTS

Next Meeting: Our next meeting is September 19 and will feature Capt Judson Brock of Muddy Fly Guide Service, Wilmington. Capt Jud will discuss local fall fishing for reds and false albacore. We might get him to say a few words about fishing for reds in Louisiana too, since he also guides there!

Asheville North Carolina (October 7-12, 2018): Just a reminder each member is responsible to make their own lodging arrangement with Ashley at the Residences of Biltmore (or elsewhere if desired).

Patrick at Hunter Banks is working on the final fisher assignments regarding guides and boats. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact Patrick directly. Patrick will be asking for deposits in September.

This trip still has room for more people so let Jim Larson know if you would like to go along.

Pond Fishing: Pond fishing will resume on Wednesday September 5 from 4:00pm – 6:00pm at the Woodlands Pond in St James Plantation. We’ll continue this each Wednesday (except for 9/19) until the Asheville trip. More details will follow over Labor Day Weekend.

Banquet: Mark your calendar, our annual winter banquet will be December 15 at the Members Club in St. James.

NEW BUSINESS

We’ll discuss 2019 and the slate of officers for next year at the October meeting.

WHAT’S BITING?

Not much biting locally on the fly, but Forest reported good action kayak fishing for Sheepshead around piers in the ICW and Capt Rob Thomson said he’s had good luck recently with reds, specs and flounder in the marsh creeks, especially behind Battery Island.

Scott Ewing made us all envious of his epic trip to Wyoming where he estimated he had a 300+ trout experience. We’ll consider this “fake news” until we see pictures!

FEATURED PROGRAM

Our very own Steve Moore successfully overcame the audio visual challenges of our meeting room and gave a very informative and educational presentation on useful apps for preparing to fish, and while on the water. Among others, the apps that Steve used the most and highlighted in his presentation are Accuweather, PredictWind, Surfchex, Anglr, Fish Rules, Marine Traffic , Tide Graph Pro and the website, LightningMaps.org Steve is a Beta Tester for Anglr and feels it is by far the most comprehensive for tracking and logging. This app essentially

replaces the manual fishing log with real time data and analysis.  Steve’s presentation is attached to the email used to distribute these minutes.

Forest mentioned to the group that he also uses “Nautide” for tracking the speed of wind and tidal change. Capt Rob also pointed out “WaypointTV” which houses Hunting and Fishing TV shows.

Respectfully submitted,

Ed Smith

President

(subbing for Madame Secretary, Nancy Fuller, who preferred to be in Canada salmon fishing!)
